Concert in aid of CLIC and St Paul's Church Fund given by the orchestra of Bristol University Music Society: St Paul's Church, Clifton
THE orchestra - 60-strong and all students at Bristol University - were under the baton of excellent 21year-old Nicholas Burns, an ex-student but now studying for his MA in music. They opened with the popular Wagner overture Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. In the second work, 16 members of the orchestra formed a chamber orchestra to play Mozart's Symphony No 29. This delightful four-movement work was played with much care and control by Burns. The major work was the epic Third Symphony of Saint-Saens (The Organ) - this has to be in the top 10 of all great symphonies. And how these young students enjoyed themselves. Caroline Foster, another ex-student, played the organ with great authority and passion. From the timpani and trumpets to the piano and strings of this fine orchestra, it was superbly performed by every member and they thoroughly deserved the applause.
